Dr. Brian Chad Starks Book Dr. Starks

Corporate and organizational leadership

For companies and organizations working on workplace culture, leadership development, accountability, and the professional relationships that hold a team together. Dr. Starks has spoken for Edward Jones, consulted for E*TRADE and the Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta, co-led a training series for the senior leadership of DRIVE in Fresno, and trained HR professionals on bias in hiring and pay.

What the work addresses

Addressing an issue takes first acknowledging that an issue exists. With a problem as large as inequality, most people cannot see how it translates into what happens on an ordinary Tuesday at work. It usually takes a colleague, a manager, or an employer to bring those everyday moments into view and help do the work of addressing them. That person is the messenger. It can be one individual, a group of peers, or a whole company that understands how culture and diversity shape its workplace and wants a part in making it more equitable for the people who work there and the people they serve.

Dr. Starks' training for organizations starts where every version of the work starts, with the four constructs, and then turns to the workplace: structural inequality and the difference between equality and equity, the cost of "I don't see color," microaggressions and what they do to a team over time, and the strategies a messenger uses to change a room without blaming the people in it.

Every engagement is built on the Be The Messenger Framework: four constructs, and the Messenger Method that runs underneath them. The Framework stays the same from one field to the next. What changes is how it is applied to the specific challenges, culture, professional responsibilities, and institutional conditions of the people in the room.
